about

As Jack Teagarden says in his stunning version of this tune in 1947 "live" in New York City, "St. James Infirmary, the oldest blues I ever heard".
An American folksong with it's roots over here in London. St James Infirmary was originally an English folksong referring to an old London Hospital, But in the early 1900's, a U.S. songwriter called Irvine Mills created some new lyrics, re-arranged some of the chord progressions, then called himself J. Primrose, and lived happily ever after.
My Dad introduced me to the Jack Teagarden 1947 version when I was a child, and each note and nuance of that recording is etched into my musical brain-cells.
In our recording, Paul allows me to do the song with a subtle rhythm section that leaves plenty of space for me to sing it well just one more time for my old Dad.
